STORIES

Hey!
Let's go to Hope.

The drive to Hope, B.C.

When I was a kid, I remember looking at the old family photo albums.

Photos before I was even born, even thought of.

There was one particular family photo taken in the summer of 1979. My mom and two brothers are standing in front of a dinosaur theme park.

When I questioned my mom about this, She said it was a Flintstones theme park, in the small town of Hope. I asked her if we could go.

Apparently, it didn’t exist anymore.

I still wanted to go to Hope.

Years passed.

I was telling my friend Josh,

about my weird desire to go out to Hope.

So, we went.

Road tunes and snacks, we were set.

Fuck ya.

The drive was absolutely beautiful.

Surrounded by snow-capped mountains and green fields all around. Everything just looked like a painting.

It didn’t feel real.

I loved it.

To the east end of the Fraser Valley in the windward of the Cascade Mountain foothills, there lies Hope. A small quaint community. A place where everyone knows everyone.

Everyone had a story and didn’t mind sharing it.

There is something about small towns in the middle of nowhere that is very appealing to me. I’m not sure why.

It was a lovely town.

Fun fact about Hope.

First Blood (1982), the first Rambo movie was filmed in Hope. Apparently, there is a larger-than-life-sized carving statue of Rambo, just chilling in the town. I didn’t get a chance to see it during the cold winter months, it’s stored away to ensure no damage is done.

Oh darn. Next time.

I just recently found out (googling) this theme park was actually not even in Hope. It was located on Highway 1 at Bridal Falls, just east of Chilliwack. And it apparently ran from 1975 to 2010.

So, I could’ve lived my childhood dream.

Oh well. Next time. Ha!
