STORIES
P is for Portland.
Portland, Oregon.
Portland is like if Seattle and San Francisco had a baby.
This was my first time driving a long distance alone to a place I’ve only been once before.
The first time I went to Portland, it was back in 2005 with my friend Nicole. We went to hang out for New Years with our friends from MySpace, you know before the internet was corrupted. Those paper print outs of Mapquest really worked back then.
Nicole did all the driving there and back. I'm still hearing about it.
I was the passenger who slept for most the road trip. She had the music blaring, I didn’t even flinch.
Nicole was frustrated, I was well rested.
We made a great team.
I remembered I really liked the vibe of the city.
Flash forward 16 years ….
My dearest friends Dree and Nathan, originally from Victoria, had been living in San Jose, Ca. for quite awhile. They moved to Portland spring of 2020.
I was excited, they were closer to home.
And then, the world lock down.
It was the beginning of the pandemic.
I couldn’t just go visit.
Once the international borders opened in November, I booked my ferry reservation to Port Angeles, Wa. and headed to Portland to see my friends.
Peace out Canada.
I buzzed the whole way. All the Americanos I drank helped. I sang back up to all my favourite songs.
The drive was beautiful.
My time in Portland was amazing.
I’ll be back.
